Expand Your Art Knowledge

Art Deco is a style of architecture that first appeared in France before World War I, but is still on full display in the Art Deco Historic District of Miami. Famous architects Henry Hohauser and Lawrence Murray Dixon were inspired by popular European designs and brought them to Miami with their own signature American touch. These buildings are masterpieces all on their own and will leave you in awe as you explore the Art Deco Historic District on a day off.

Miami also has some incredible museums that make the perfect daytime adventure. Check out the Perez Art Museum Miami, Wynwood Walls, and Lowe Art Museum while on assignment in Miami to appreciate art throughout history.

The Perez Art Museum is full of international modern and contemporary art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The Wynwood Walls is an outdoor museum filled with unique urban graffiti, with more than 35 hand-sprayed murals and street art galleries. The Lowe Art Museum is a visual arts museum rich in history as it was the first museum in South Florida, opening in 1950. It is located in a suburb just outside the city and operated by the University of Miami.

Be sure to visit Maximo Gomez Park, known as Domino Park, while in Little Havana. The 40-year-old tradition of competitive dominos emulates authentic Latin culture and is truly incredible to experience. Locals can be found playing at any time of the day and love to have an audience!

While in Little Havana, Cuban cuisine will be calling your name. Calle Ocho (Southwest 8th Street) in Little Havana is a street full of world-famous Cuban cuisine restaurants. From Cuban coffee, empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, and more, you need to try every place on Calle Ocho!

Ease Your Soul in the Sun

It’s no secret that Miami is lined with more than a dozen beaches stretching over 35 miles long, and a day in the sun is a great way to relax in between shifts.  What makes these beaches so special is that the Atlantic Ocean merges with the Caribbean Sea along Miami’s coast, creating clear blue water and soft sand. You will want to set aside multiple days to fully experience all that the beaches have to offer in Miami.

Have a beach day at South Point Park, the southernmost tip of South Beach, known for its 360-degree ocean views and art sculptures. This beautiful area is full of life with cruise ships, a water park, and even a dog park! Bring a book and enjoy the view.

If fishing is on your bucket list, plan a day at South Pointe Park Pier. You can fish off the pier or the rocks that run alongside the deep water. This is completely free, you just need to bring your equipment and patience for your first catch.

Just west of Miami, you can explore the Everglades with an airboat ride to see alligators! Alligators can only be found in a few regions in the US, so don’t miss this unforgettable experience. The everglades are just 30 minutes away from the city, making them the perfect day-off adventure.

When you have a few days away from the hospital, plan an epic trip to Key West. Driving through the Florida Keys is an adventure itself, full of miles and miles of ocean views. Queue up your favorite playlist and enjoy the ride.
