Parks, Parks, Parks

Washington is home to a myriad of state parks, 14 to be exact, so you can never run out of majestic views or a spot for a photo while exploring.  Here are some of the favorite parks to check out!

Olympic National Park is known as one of the state’s best and features a spot called Ruby Beach. It earned its name for the ruby-colored gemstones that can be found in its sand. This shoreline also offers scenic views of mountains and glaciers.

Another eye-catching location to visit while traveling in Washington is Mount Rainier National Park. The mountain ascends 14,411 feet above sea level and is a popular bucket list item. You can experience this breathtaking beauty on the Mr. Rainier Gondola ride that takes you over 2,400 vertical feet to the summit. There is even a restaurant at the top to elevate your experience.

Take the Washington State Ferry out to The San Juan Islands to take in the glory of all 172 islands. The horseshoe-shaped Orcas Island is one of the main isles and is a great place to see pods of Orcas and other marine mammals. San Juan Island is also distinguished by the lively seaside town of Friday Harbor and Lime Kiln Point State Park, an orca-whale lookout.

City Lights

While in Washington, Seattle is the city at the top of everyone’s list. Its nickname is the Emerald City, and it’s easy to get lost in the wonders the city has to offer. At the top of the list is Chihuly Garden and Glass, located next to the Space Needle, which features an amazing array of both indoor and outdoor installations of hand-blown glass. It has been open since 2012 and is a popular destination.

Another Seattle staple is the Pike Place Market. Take a Sunday afternoon to roam one of the country’s oldest farmers’ markets. It is known for its enthusiastic energy full fish-throwing vendors and the first-ever Starbucks coffeehouse. Down an unassuming alleyway in Pike Place Market is a hidden work of art dubbed The Gum Wall. This unexpected and colorful display is an intriguing representation of Seattle’s unique charm and character.

Fresh Spots

Apple farming has been a Washington staple throughout history and the state currently produces 60% of the nation’s apples. While you are there, you have to take advantage of your proximity to some of the freshest fruit around. Visit one of the thousands of apple orchards and pick and fill your own bags of apples.

Grapes are also grown abundantly in the state of Washington so wineries will be all around. Unwind from a week of work and visit the Chateau Ste. Michelle, one of Washington’s finest. It features award-winning wines and a French-style chateau. With some of the oldest vines in Washington, DeLille Cellars in Woodinville is also a great spot to relax and taste a variety of blends.
